LEGO ‘bomb disposal’ and building your own truck are just some of the fun activities for kids being run by the REME Museum during the Summer holidays.
The Museum, which recently opened in Lyneham, Wiltshire, puts on a number of workshops and activity days for families and schools throughout the year, and has kicked off the summer holiday season with a hugely popular LEGO Engineering workshop.
The workshop, developed in partnership with Lyneham Primary School, saw children exploring the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Museum displays to solve problems with LEGO.
REME Museum Education Officer Oliver Parr said: “One of the scenarios involved moving a “pipe bomb” from a LEGO village to safety.
“The families learned about gearing systems, pulleys etc from the design of vehicles we have on display and then worked out how to build their own systems to solve the problems.”
Families also took part in a competitive “build-off’ – recreating some of the amazing vehicles on show in the museum using LEGO Education Technics kit – with the winner receiving a small REME prize.
The workshop, supported with funding from the Engineering Education Scheme, is designed to be a fun family activity that also works closely with the schools’ national curriculum and Mr Parr said he hoped to get more local schools involved in the future.
“A lot of what goes on in the museum has been developed with input from teachers and schools, and we’ve had a great response from a lot of local schools”, he said.
The LEGO workshop is just part of a programme of activities for children and families throughout the summer holidays, including:
- LEGO Workshop: 25th August 1 pm – 2.45 pm, booking required
- Camouflage-themed activities day: 30th August – 11 am to 3.30 pm, drop in
