The REME Museum will be closed to the public from 16.00, Friday 20 March until further notice, in response to government guidance regarding the COVID-19 outbreak.
We have taken this tough decision because we are concerned about the well being of visitors and staff.
All upcoming events and bookings are cancelled. We have tried to anticipate a few of your questions below.
How long is the Museum closed for?
The Museum will reopen when government advice suggests it is safe to do so. Information about reopening will be communicated through our website and social media.
Are Museum events and activities cancelled?
All Museum events are cancelled until further notice. This includes:
- Easter holiday activities
- Wartime Britain, 9-10 May
- Armed Forces Day, 27 June
- Ivan Hirst Rally, 18 July
All booked group visits, room bookings, school trips etc. are also cancelled.
What about the shop and Crown’s Cafe?
The Museum’s gift shop and the REME Shop are closed until further notice. The REME Shop is still operating a mail order service via their website but please be aware that deliveries may take longer than usual.
Crown’s Cafe is now also closed to the public until further notice. Please check Crown’s Cafe’s facebook page for up to date details.
How do I cancel my booking and get a refund?
If you have booked a group visit, payed for a room or arranged a school trip please contact email@example.com. Your request will then be directed to the appropriate member of staff who will record your cancellation and explain how to request a refund. This may take some time but we are grateful for your patience.
Will my research visit still go ahead?
No, all pre-booked research visits are cancelled until further notice. Staff will contact you directly to explore other options to facilitate your enquiry.
Will the Museum still receive research enquiries?
Yes, all research enquiries can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org and they will be forwarded to the appropriate person. The Research and Archives Team are able to remotely access our catalogue and some digitised material, but our response will be limited if access to any original archival material is required.
Can I still donate items to the Museum?
We are unable to take custody of new items until further notice. You should not post items to the Museum without prior contact with staff as the front desk is not staffed to receive parcels.
Is the collection safe?
The Museum’s collections are checked regularly by staff to make sure they are safe and secure. The Museum building is monitored by private and MOD security.
I visited the Museum recently, have there been any confirmed cases among staff or visitors?
To date there have been no confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 among Museum staff. We are unaware of any visitors showing symptoms since their visit.
What are staff up to?
We are working on projects that can be completed from home; things like research for future exhibitions, data cleaning and preparing a new website. We will also be updating our current website and social media. Check our pages for news, collections treasures, kids activities and more.
