Volunteering at the REME Museum of Technology
Volunteers are an integral part of the REME Museum; they contribute a continuous stream of data entry into our collections management database as they input the backlog of REME Corps Archive documents and photographs.
Our volunteers connect the museum with the local and wider community; bringing a vast breadth of experience and skills, of which they give generously. They work with the staff in data entry and in maintaining and repairing items of the electronics collection. They provide the museum with a balanced happy workforce who are able to work individually and collectively; and their enthusiasm in their work enhances the workplace for all.
Volunteers are welcome. We have a process of informal interview and introduction to the Museum work environment.
The jobs that volunteers undertake:
Data Entry – The mainstay of volunteer work.
It involves entering a record of each item, photograph or document onto our database (Adlib) to create a digital record of every item in the collection. This allows staff and researchers to find, track and sort any item in our huge collection for research or display.
Digitisation Project - The Museum is launching into a project to digitise the Documentry Archives, Photograph Albums and Photographic Collection from 2012. To accomplish this we will need to assemble a team of volunteers who have some skills in managing Files Folders and Directories and come with some ability to manipulate photographs in Adobe Photoshop. We will offer some training on our scanning and photographic equipment. We are looking for a team who will work to a high standard and who can come regularly.
Restoration Work – Valuable restoration work is undertaken by volunteers with a keen interest in old electronic equipment like radios and telecommunication devices. We provide a workshop where most restoration work is carried out; the volunteers provide the time, skills and expertese.
Handyman – There is work for a handyman throughout the museum to maintain and develop our interactive displays as well as our exhibits.
Teaching Aid – The museum provides a number of school KS2 Curriculum workshops; and here help is welcome, preferably those with past teaching experience.
Interested in Volunteering? Just get in touch for an informal interview and to meet staff and other volunteers.
As a volunteer you become part of the life of the REME Museum; and included in the coffee mornings, Summer barbecue and the Christmas lunch. Volunteer travel is not paid but coffee and tea is provided for their use.
