It is a two-man load, the base plate with traversing and cross levelling being carried on the back of the one man and the barrel and elevating screw on the back of the other.

Weapon No 462
OML 2 inch Mortar

This ordnance was introduced into service in January 1939. It was used throughout World War 2 in 3 different versions, Infantry, Airborne and Carrier, which differ in minor details. It fired 5 different types of bombs to a maximum range of 525 yards and consisted of a barrel, a breech piece and a spade or base plate (carrier version). The ordnance on display was captured from the IRA and is a combination of an infantry barrel and carrier base plate.
