.476 inch Pistol Smoothbore Four Barrelled

REME Weapon 216 - .476 inch Pistol Smoothbore Four Barrelled

This pistol, designed in 1882 by Charles Lancester, the London arms manufacturer, was used by some British officers during the Colonial wars. It has a group of four, hinged barrels superimposed in two layers, each barrel having its own firing pin. This pistol is inscribed 'Capt Headlam. Royal Horse Artillery'.

Designed by John Dickson of Edinburgh and introduced about 1850. Used primarily for target shooting. Probably used the Flobert system (rimfire).

The maker of this pistol is unknown and very few data are available. The barrel is rifled and it is single shot action. The trigger-like lever forward of the trigger guard unlocks the barrel when pulled to the rear. This pistol has the appearance of being custom built.

Weapon No 455
Remington Derringer .41 inch

REME Weapon 455 - Remington Derringer .41 inch

A double-barrelled over and under Derringer made by Remington about 1866, which fires .41 inch rim fire cartridges. One of the first made, richly engraved with mother of pearl grips, was presented to Buffalo Bill Cody.
