The museum's military vehicle collection is amongst the largest in the country. Most of the vehicles have some special connection with REME either as repair vehicles or recovery vehicles. From the Thornycroft Hathi Tractor, used for recovery in its later service, to a prototype of the Challenger Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle, the collection spans 70 years of motor vehicle technology and recovery equipment.
When the museum started in 1957 the collection contained just two vehicles. Now, through the efforts of serving and ex-REME officers and soldiers, it has grown to over 100. Around 20 are on display in the museum’s Prince Phillip Vehicle Hall in Arborfield. The remainder are housed in the museum vehicle store at Bordon, Hampshire. Here they are accessible by appointment at the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Alternatively, those vehicles kept in running order can often be seen at shows such as vehicle rallies.
