Introduction
The Museum's 'Day of Engineering Challenge' competition for schools is organised by the Museum and is facilitated by Mr John Done of Appropriate Professional Training Ltd.
Aim
The aim of the day is to increase pupils' awareness of engineering as a future career, both within the Army and as civilians. The day will also show students and their accompanying teachers the challenging nature of engineering in the army at large - it's problem solving, teamwork and fun!
How to participate
Local schools are invited to send up to 10 teams of 6 students to compete against other local schools during this event. Teams should not be limited to budding scientists or engineers, and will be selected from schools on a first come first served basis. Craft skills are not essential but commonsense is. The challenge will include explanations of basic engineering principles and of an engineering challenge, followed by its design, fabrication, testing and prize giving. A timetable of the event is given below.

Costs can vary, depending on the numbers attending.

Indoor talk by REME soldiers explaining how they would fix a broken tank engine in the field without putting the tank out of action for a long period. Vehicle demonstration of a mock-up power pack change on the hard standing at the back of the Vehicle Hall.

Project 2:
|
Design and build a crane or lifting mechanism to lift and manoeuvre an engine out of one vehicle and into an another armoured vehicle across a distance of 600 mm. It must have controls to stop the engine swinging and causing damage to the vehicle or engine drive shafts. The apparatus must have night use capability.
Explanation and 3 possible solutions. Teams begin work on designing and building their cranes. Mr John Done to lead this exercise.
