Original Poperinghe Barracks - View 1

Poperinghe Barracks, named after a small town in Western Flanders, Belgium, was constructed in 1939 and originally housed units of the Royal Artillery. It became Depot REME in 1948 and as many as 100,000 REME soldiers passed through its gates prior to closure in 1977. The Guardroom itself was for a time used to house the Arborfield Newsagent and local Youth Club offices. It will shortly be demolished to make way for a housing development.

The reconstructed Guardroom is to form a new entrance to the Museum. It will be complete with white picket fence, gardens, flagpole and veranda and the interior will contain a much needed tea room, a reception area and shop. Pride of place will go to an authentic guardroom display containing 1950s furniture and artefacts and a representative cell. Use will be made audio and animatronic techniques to create a realistic, educational and stimulating environment.
