REME BELL TOWER - FALL & RISE
|
|
On Monday 29 October 2007, eight members of 24 Training Support Squadron,
1 RSME, Chatham arrived at Arborfield to set about the refurbishment of the REME Bell Tower.
The team led by Sgt Connor RE and LCpl Watkiss RE went straight to work
and the air was soon filled with the sound of sanding machines, the clanking of scaffolding and the
sawing of wood. The challenge was to complete the refurbishment in only four days. The bit that we
were all looking forward to, albeit with some trepidation, was the raising and fitting of the canopy.
We needn't have worried though as the task was given to a Foden Recovery Crew from the RSME Workshop
at Minley. Cpl Allen and Cfn Amos from the workshop soon had the roof in place and made
it all look very easy. The refurbishment of the tower was finally completed on Thursday afternoon,
well within the time schedule set. The REME Museum of Technology is very grateful for all the
assistance received from the Sappers at Chatham and the two REME lads from Minley. The Bell Tower
has never looked better and hopefully will be in place at the entrance to the museum for a few more
years before it has to move again. The story continues.....

The bell and its tower were presented to the Corps in 1966 on the evacuation
of HQ Technical Group REME from the Woolwich Dockyard. The bell, a forerunner of the time clock was
rung at Woolwich at the commencement and finish of work.
Earlier in the year, visitors to the REME Museum would not have failed to
notice the sad sight of the REME Bell Tower lying on its side just inside the entrance. The tower
had been moved to the Museum in early 2006 for safe keeping and erection within the grounds. On
Thursday 8 February 2007, amidst a snowstorm, the tower was raised, to the cheers of
local bystanders.
