KS2 History 'WW2' Workshop
Women's Changing Role in War

Mini Workshop - 25 minutes

Aim

To learn about the changing roles of men and women before, during and after the war.

 
Method

A member of Museum staff will discuss the following with your group of pupils:

• Children's perceptions of work done pre war by women.

• When war broke out and the men went to war - what happened? Who was going to deliver the milk, drive the buses, harvest the crops, work in the factories etc.

• Whilst women were working during the war what happened to their children during the day?

• Using visual aids illustrate the number of uniform services they could join. Why were they needed?

• ATS in case - describe job with aids and artefacts.

List of items used in the activity

• Selection of photographs showing women's roles during the war

• Women's services poster

• Interactive profile boxes containing uniforms/artifacts

• Interactive boards for ordering the working day

• Shell cases

• Tin snips (scissors)

• 'D' ring
