Museum Collections

The collections, archives and displays of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Museum of Technology reflect REME's skills in the field of engineering support to the Army since 1942. They include:

Specialist REME Vehicles

Over 100 working vehicles illustrating the history of REME's role in mobile recovery, repair and maintenance of Army equipment in the field. Approximately 20 on display in the Prince Philip Hall.

Electronics Collection

This collection shows the Army's use of developing technology such as the radios used in WW2 and from valves, through transistors to microchips. It covers communications equipment; field telephones and radios; RADAR; control equipment beginning with anti-aircraft predictors up to today's Multiple Launch Rocket System as used in the Gulf War; guidance systems for rockets and missiles; and 50 years of medical and dental equipment.

Aeronautical Collection

In 1957 the Army Air Corps was formed with its own aircraft, maintained by REME technicians. The Auster fixed wing aircraft was soon replaced by rotary wing helicopters in the main: Skeeter, Scout, Alouette, Lynx, Gazelle and now the new Apache attack helicopter. The collections reflect the developing role of REME and the technology of the aircraft and its maintenance. A Scout helicopter is on display in the Prince Philip Hall.

Weapons Collection

Stored securely in an armoury within the garrison, the REME Museum weapons collection illustrates developing gun technology from the flintlock pistol to today's service rifle, the SA80. It illustrates the role and skills of armourers over three centuries and more particularly during REME's lifetime.

Reserve Collection

This store of memorabilia, models, medals, uniform, kit and equipment, war souvenirs, trophies and ephemera illustrates the life and times of the REME soldier around the world.

Documentary Archives

These archives contain a substantial collection of documents covering British Army history and REME histories at all levels, reports, articles, diaries, personal papers and associated items. Information can be discovered covering anything from a high level operational order to a lifetime collection of personal papers and ephemera forming a detailed individual account of Army life.

Technical Archives

REME maintains Army equipment and is responsible for scaling spares, designing modifications for different conditions and tasks. It is involved in the development of new equipments to ensure their ease of maintenance under field conditions. The technical archives house the repair and maintenance manuals for all equipments, parts lists, drawings and reports.

Pictorial Archives

These archives contain photographic prints and negatives, films and video tapes, paintings and etchings, maps and charts and a collection of cartoons. The archives give a visual representation of the people, the equipments, the establishments and the areas of operation in which REME has been involved since 1942, together with a significant record of many earlier equipments, personalities and units from WW1 onwards.
