Design Your Own Workshop

Introduction

The Museum is keen to organise visits to suit your group's needs. You can combine activities from our other workshops and from the list below. Please select those which meet your needs for the Education Officer to put together a cross-curricular workshop and timetable. These visits must be booked in advance.

 
Design and Technology Activities

Belt Up!  Use the Museum's peg boards, wooden pegs, cotton reels, elastic bands and ribbon to make a variety of belt drives. Belt drive boards cannot be taken home. Build a Bridge  Build a bridge using newspaper to cross a metre wide imaginary river. The bridge must support a weight for one minute. More information on the Challenge Sheet. Build a Radio Mast  Design and build the tallest freestanding radio mast using 25 drinking straws. More information on the Challenge Sheet.
Build It!  Build a solution to one of three challenges using household junk (suitable for young children). Craftsman Bones  Make a moving skeleton by cutting out the soldier's body parts and attaching them together using paper fasteners. Design a Meal  Make a meal on a plate using collage materials and information about healthy foods.
Drop Zone  Build an invention to drop safely a model wooden truck out of a flying aeroplane. More information on the Challenge Sheet. Fast Cars  Build a car to travel the furthest distance down a ramp and along the floor. Cars are built from household junk. Flight Zone  Design and build a paper aeroplane to travel the furthest distance along the test flight path.
Magnetic Racing Boats  Make magnetic racing boats using corks, paperclips, Blue Tac, cocktail sticks and coloured paper. Sea trials are conducted in the water tank (weather dependent!). Make a Kite  Make a Delta wing kite and fly it outside (weather dependent!). Morse Code Transmitters  Build transmitters and receivers to send Morse Code messages using card, wire, pegs, paper fasteners, kitchen foil, batteries, battery holders, light bulbs and light bulb holders.
Newspaper Towers  Build the tallest freestanding tower using just newspaper and sellotape. Paddle Boats  Build a simple paddleboat using waterproof board and elastic bands or an amphibious vehicle with wheels and a paddle. Sea trials for these boats are conducted in the water tank (weather dependent!). Roll-a-Long  A team challenge to move a model engine (heavy cardboard box) from A to B through a swamp using tree logs (strong cardboard tubes). The fastest team wins.
Scrap Heap Challenge  Build a tank transporter using household junk to transport one, two or three model tanks. Stained Glass Lantern  Build a working stained glass lantern using card, cellophane, battery, battery holder, light bulb, light bulb holder and wire. Straw Cranes  Build a crane to lift a model truck using 40 drinking straws.
Straw Towers  Design and build the tallest freestanding straw tower using 25 drinking straws. The tower must support a marble as high as possible for 30 seconds. Wind-Powered Dodgems  Build a wind-powered Dodgem using a cardboard cut-out, straws and cardboard wheels. Dodgems are tested on a racetrack.

 
Art Activities

Design a Flag  Design and make a flag using fabric, wooden sticks and collage materials. Giant Wacky Vehicles  Create a giant collage of wacky vehicles using collage materials. Groups work on one long piece of paper to create a mural which can be taken away at the end of the visit. Machine Sculptures  Build big sculptures to look like machines using household junk, kitchen foil and collage materials.
Robot Collage  Create a collage of a robot who can carry out different types of jobs, eg to polish a soldier's boots. Stained Glass Window  Design and make a stained glass window using black card and coloured cellophane.

 
Communication

Braille  Create words in Braille using card, kitchen foil and glue. Code Wheels  Make Code Wheels to send and receive secret messages. Semaphore  Use Semaphore flags to send and receive secret messages.
Telephone Battleships  In pairs, play battleships using the British Army Field Telephones to communicate with the opposition. Secret Pictures  In pairs, take it in turns to describe a drawing to a partner using the British Army Field Telephone. The partner must then draw the picture based on the description they have heard. Simple Telephones  Make simple telephones using plastic cups and string. Practice using them and find out how the sound is transmitted.

 
Games

Giant Draughts  Play Draughts on our giant outdoor draughts board (weather dependent!). Giant Jenga  Play Jenga with our giant outdoor Jenga bricks (weather dependent!).

An additional charge to the normal admission charges will be made for these activities. Please contact the Education Officer (see below) for more details.
