The Museum's Science Workshop, linked to the National Curriculum, was developed in 2002 in conjunction with three local schoolteachers and the Central Berkshire and South East Berkshire Education Business Partnerships. It has been devised by teachers for teachers and their pupils. This is a three-hour workshop and takes place in the Museum's Vehicle Exhibition Hall. If your group wishes to extend their visit they will be able to try the Museum's quizzes in the Main Museum and Vehicle Exhibition Hall.

Your visit will consist of the Bug Hunt and four Mini Workshops. You can choose
from the following six.
Please Note - All the Workshops are led by your
Group Teacher or Helper (except for Field Telephones and Morse Code, which is led by the
Education Officer)
| Bug Hunt We have a bug infestation! Working in small groups the pupils spot as many bugs as possible hidden on the vehicles. |
|
| Drop Zone Workshop Pupils use silk parachutes to explore the forces of gravity and resistance. They will be working next to the Museum's real parachute display. |
Field Telephones and Morse Code Workshop Led by the Education Officer. Pupils wire up British Army Field Telephones and use the Museum's specially made Morse Code Transmitters to learn about simple circuits. |
| Forces and Motion Workshop Pupils explore the forces of magnets, friction and jet propulsion through these activities: Survival Fishing, Hover Bover, Balloon Rockets and Sticky Balloons. |
Shadow Puppets Workshop Pupils make their own caterpillar puppets and create a play in the Museum's Shadow Theatre to learn about light and shadow |
| Venn Diagrams: Light and Conductors & Insulators Workshop Pupils explore the properties of real objects from the Museum's collection. Light: Sorting objects using a torch to test if objects are opaque, transparent or translucent. Conductors & Insulators: Sorting objects using a simple circuit to test if objects are conductors or insulators. |
Venn Diagram: Materials Workshop Pupils explore the properties of real objects from the Museum's collection. Objects are sorted according to the materials they are made of: metal, plastic, paper, wood, leather, and fabric. |
| View Main Museum and Vehicle Hall An opportunity for pupils to view the Museum's displays and vehicles. A range of quiz sheets and activities are available for pupils to use in the galleries. Teachers and helpers are responsible for organising and supervising pupils during this time. |
Visit to Museum Gift Shop (Optional) Please ensure pupils visit the shop in small groups with an adult helper. The shop stocks a range of pocket money souvenirs from pencils to posters. |
Maximum group size is 36 pupils
The Museum requires a minimum of five helpers: One teacher/helper per group and one to act as an escort for children needing to visit the toilet during the activities
Please divide your class into 4 mixed ability groups before you arrive
Teachers and helpers will be expected to run each mini workshop using the Teachers' Notes provided. The Museum's Education Officer will run the Field Telephones and Morse Code workshop. If time allows, we strongly recommend helpers have a brief look at the Activity Sheets to familiarise themselves with all the activities before the Science Workshop starts.
Extension Activities are provided on the Activity Sheets. If a group does not have time to complete them during the workshop they can be used as follow-up work back at school
£3.50 per pupil for ½ day visit
£4.00 per pupil for full day visit
All adult helpers free of charge
