To explore the forces of magnets, friction and jet propulsion through four different activities.
Survival Fishing
Predict which fish they will catch with magnetic fishing rods.
Pupils take it in turns to 'catch' a fish.
Results are recorded on an Activity Sheet.
Decide which fish are magnetic and non-magnetic and record their answers on the Activity Sheet.
Hover Bover
Predict which surface the hovercraft will hover over the best.
Make the hovercraft and test each surface.
Results are recorded on an Activity Sheet.
Pupils are asked which surface was best and why.
Draw a picture to show how you would make a hovercraft move forward.
Balloon Rockets
Blow up your balloon.
Attach it to the race track (string).
Let the balloon go and see whose is the fastest.
Pupils are encouraged to answer the following questions:
Whose balloon was the quickest?
Whose balloon travelled the furthest?
What pushes the balloon along?
What pushes a real rocket along?
Sticky Balloons
Rub 2 balloons against your jumper.
Tie the balloons to a stick with the rubbed sides facing each other and see what happens. Balloons should swing away from each other as they have the same charge.
Try turning one balloon the other way to see what happens.
What other things can they stick the balloon to?
Magnetic fish and fishing rod
Hovercraft, balloon pump and 4 surfaces
Balloon Rocket race track (string), balloons and pumps
Balloons, stick and string
