Key Stage 2 Design and Technology 'Shelters' Workshop

Introduction

The Museum's Shelters Workshop, linked to the National Curriculum, was developed in 2000 in conjunction with a local schoolteacher. It has been devised by teachers for teachers and their pupils. This is a two-hour outdoor workshop and takes place in the Museum's grounds. Led by the Museum's Education Officer, pupils will experience at first hand the Army's unique shelters. If your group wishes to extend their visit they will be able to enjoy the Museum's Main Museum and Vehicle Hall in the afternoon.

Activity 2 - Bivouac
Pupils watch as the Education Officer builds a bivouac shelter and discusses with the pupils the bivouac's uses, advantages and disadvantages. Pupils will sketch the bivouac, label the parts and are encouraged to suggest improvements to the bivouac's design.
Activity 3 - Build a Shelter
Split into small groups, the pupils are challenged to build their own shelter capable of sheltering their whole team from the rain using the materials provided (2 m/6 ft ash poles, plastic sheeting, brown sacking, string and scissors). Pupils can utilise their new knowledge of Army shelters to help them to design their shelter. The Education Officer will test and evaluate each shelter.
