Whilst the standardised ‘combat' range of vehicles was under development, there was a pressing need to replace wartime trucks and for most uses a simplified off road vehicle based largely on a commercial design was adequate. In the early 1950s such trucks were introduced made by Austin, Morris, Ford, Commer and Bedford. By far the greatest number were Bedfords. REME used various special versions of the Bedford RL and some cargo versions for domestic use. This vehicle is basically a cargo truck but will be used in the Museum as a platform truck to carry a machinery container.
The Bedford RL was originally rated as a 3 ton load carrier but was later upgraded to a 4 metric ton capacity. It was generally replaced by the Bedford MK in the 1970s.
