This vehicle is currently on display at the Museum
Otherwise known as the ‘REME fitters' vehicle' this variant of the FV432 APC was purpose designed to replace the half track. The new vehicle's hydraulic crane could lift a greater weight. It could also position the supported load much more easily as it had slewing ability which the half track could only achieve by moving the vehicle itself.
The cavernous rear bay of the 434 was intended for the carriage of replacement engines and other assemblies. This soon became impractical when the power pack system came into use and most 434s were fitted like the half tracks to carry smaller spare parts, tools etc and to provide additional crew space. Usually a canvas canopy was fitted but this had to be partly removed when the crane was operated.
The emergence of heavier power packs curtailed the usefulness of the FV434 in support of main battle tanks and it was replaced in this role by a Warrior repair vehicle in the 1990s.
The Museum's FV434 is in full working order.
