After World War 2 the four main allied powers occupied separate zones of Berlin which lay within the Russian occupied zone of Germany. The financial arrangements for maintaining British forces in Berlin were different from those applying in West Germany, with the result that much equipment used by the Army there was locally purchased.
For many years the domestic vehicles and some of the military off road vehicles were bought in West Germany. These included various recovery vehicles for Berlin Workshop. In the 1970s the Magirus Deutz recovery vehicles were due for replacement. The opportunity was taken to provide vehicles more suited to the additional role of rescuing broken down British or Allied vehicles on the Autobahn Corridor between West Germany and Berlin. This task demanded fast recovery to reach such vehicles, including servicemen's private cars and remove them before the Russian or East German security forces could interfere.
The Swedish built four wheeled drive Volvo F88 was selected for this role and a few were purchased. When these were superseded in the early 1990s one was donated by the Berlin city authorities, who technically owned the vehicle, to the REME museum.
