We're hiring! A vacancy has arisen to join the award-winning REME Museum as a Museum Assistant.

At the home dedicated to the history of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) corps this role will focus on cataloguing and auditing the Museum’s collection and administration of the Museum’s Gold Card membership scheme, which is open to all REME serving personnel. With opportunities for work on conserving the collection, assisting with the new acquisitions of objects and partaking in the setup and running of the Museum’s busy events programme.

The post would suit someone seeking to begin a career in museums or who is looking to enhance their experience of working in a heritage organisation.

Key responsibilities

  • To assist the Museum’s Collections Team with cataloguing the existing collection, new acquisitions, conservation, environmental monitoring and maintenance of the Museum’s galleries.
  • Administration of the Museum’s Gold Card membership scheme.
  • Co-ordinating and submitting the Museum’s stationery demand.
  • Any other tasks commensurate with the role and as directed by line management.

Knowledge and skills

  • A museum or heritage qualification would be advantageous, as would previous experience of collections management.
  • Knowledge of the Spectrum standards and familiarity with the MODES collections management system or equivalent software.
  • The ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail, a logical way of working and good analytical ability.
  • Computer literate including Microsoft Excel.
  • Flexible and reliable.

Terms and conditions

  • Salary: £25,993.50
  • Hours: Standard weekly hours are 37.5, but some weekend and evening working will be required in line with operational need. Time off in lieu for these periods will be provided
  • Location: Lyneham, Wiltshire
  • Holiday: 25 days, exclusive of Bank Holidays
  • Pension: Mandatory enrolment in the Government-approved scheme NEST pension scheme
