Volunteer

The REME Museum is supported by a team of hard-working and enthusiastic volunteers who help with collections, events and activities. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming and supportive place to volunteer, and we value the contribution our volunteers make. Volunteering is a good way to meet new people, gain new skills and support the Museum.

We currently have the following volunteer programmes open.

To register your interest in any of the roles, or to have a preliminary chat to gain more information, please contact [email protected] or telephone us on 01249 894869.

Gardener

The REME Museum is looking for gardeners! Only those with green fingers need apply! Seriously, we are genuinely looking for a gardener to help with some projects that will benefit the Museum. The first is our wartime garden. As part of our education programme and Greening the Museum project, we are going to recreate a domestic back garden as it might have appeared during the Second World War. This includes the reconstruction of an Anderson Shelter (used to protect people during Nazi bombing raids), and a small “Dig for Victory” vegetable garden. Visiting school groups will be shown the garden to demonstrate the efforts many families went to during the War in an effort to produce their own food, and reduce the need to import fruit and vegetables from abroad.

None of what is grown will go to waste, as our plan is to give it to Crown's Café so they can incorporate it in their menu.

This is clearly a long-term project, and may best suit someone who is able to make frequent trips to the Museum.

The second project is the improvement of the Museum’s window boxes. The Museum has seven of these along the front of the building, and we are looking for someone to enhance these by planting colourful, seasonal flowers in them in order to give our visitors a very good first impression.

REME Ready!

As a REME Ready! volunteer you will enhance visits to the Museum through the stories and memories of veterans and currently serving personnel. You will be keen to share your service with the public, and help people understand REME’s special purpose, skills and esprit de corps.

For more information on becoming a REME Ready! volunteer, please find the REME Ready! Role Description.

Tour Guides

The REME Museum frequently receives requests for guided tours around our wonderful displays. Staff members are normally able to provide these, but there are occasions when this proves difficult and so we are looking for friendly individuals who enjoy talking with members of the public to lead these groups.

This is a great way for you to support the Museum and make sure those on the tour really enjoy their visit.

For more information on becoming a REME Museum Tour Guide, please find the Tour Guide Role Description.

Education Assistant

The REME Museum has an excellent reputation for providing stimulating and popular workshops, based on the STEM curriculum, for leaners of all ages and abilities. A day when a school visits the Museum is invariably a very busy one, and we are looking for a volunteer who can come in and provide an extra pair of hands to assist Andrew, the Museum’s Education Officer.

This will be a very busy, varied and unpredictable role, and will be suited to someone who is able to turn their hand to virtually anything and also think on their feet.

A DBS check will be required for this role.

Volunteer with the Collections

A museum’s collection is at the heart of everything that it does. Whether it is education, exhibitions or the preparation of new permanent displays, the collection is central to every activity it undertakes.

Our database of information about the collection continues to grow at a steady pace, and if you would like to assist with this process and have the following qualities, then do please get in touch!

  • Good attention to detail.
  • The ability to concentrate well for extended periods.
  • An understanding of the importance of museum collections.
  • A positive approach to training and taking instruction.
  • Strong organisational skills.

Practical Considerations

Please contact us to discuss any access requirements you may have.

We are able to provide travel expenses of 30p per mile up to a maximum value of £25.
